Ocean Rain by Valentino

Artemesia, Basil, Bergamot, Green Note, Lavender, Lemon.
Calendula, Carnation, Cyclamen, Balsam Fir, Orris Root, Rose, Thyme.
Amber, Leather, Cedar, Moss.

This particular fragrance is one that truly fits the term "eclectic" and is courtesy of Edmond Roudnitska. It's a difficult one to hate and just as difficult to love. I don't find many an occasion to wear it, but there's something about it that gives me joy by simply having it in my cabinet to spray when the mood strikes as I putter around the house.

The opening of Ocean Rain is a spicy, citric lavender accord butting heads with a bitter herbaceousness. There's also a sharper, green aspect in the mix that seems separate from the herbs.

It gets stranger still with the advent of a marine quality that not only suggests water, but possesses a wispy menthol. There's no better scent I own to entertain myself than this creation. There is so much going on under the surface that I seem to discover something different each time.

On any given wearing, I can imagine the aroma of wooden planks soaked to the point of rotting with partially decayed flowers, salt, well worn leather straps and plant stems nearby. Other times, I experience a slightly indolic sourness in conjunction with the suggestion of a salt water environment and leathery wood.

Yes indeed, Ocean Rain is one interesting and difficult-to-wear fragrance. I also consider it a masterpiece of perfumery because of the elements it contains. There's nothing beautiful here but it has character. Boldness, adventurism and risk are all present and these attributes are extremely difficult to find these days.

Ocean Rain is one of the more unique designer fragrances you will encounter. You may like it for the same reasons I do or you may smell it and think that I must be insane for extolling a fragrance like this. You be the judge.

Sillage is good and longevity is approximately 4 hours plus on me. Thumbs up from Aromi for Ocean Rain and all it brings to the table.

  1. Hi Aromi,

I've been following your blog for several months, but haven't commented partly because I'm lazy, but mostly because I so agonize over something meaningful to say that it just doesn't get written. Your style of writing and the print/photo lay-out are terrific and I've tried several perfumes on your recommendation.

Thanks for the consistently high quality reviews!
