Davidoff by Davidoff

Lemon, Lime, Basil, Artemesia.
Carnation, Thyme, Rose, Orris Root.
Patchouli, Leather, Moss, Castoreum.

Davidoff is a penetrating and diffusive masculine. It's color appropriate, but the light green hue belies the presence this fragrance actually possesses.

Not long ago, it was pointed out to me that Vermeil for Men in the tan bottle that's shaped like a cigar lighter was exactly the same as Davidoff.  After numerous side by side comparisons, I agree there are many similarities. However, Davidoff is clearly the superior fragrance in both fullness and aroma. Vermeil for Men is akin to Davidoff Lite.

Davidoff opens with a deep and tangy citrus accord that embellishes a degree of heaviness. There's hints of herb, resin and even a wispy mint-like note all wrapped up in the bold, citric top. Regretfully, this only lasts a few minutes and is quickly supplanted by a herbaceous, tobacco tandem that's quite bold.

Leading the heart is carnation interwoven with spices. It's not a full blown aromatic, but evident nonetheless and these instigate the tobacco in becoming more prevalent. There's also a slightly burnt quality here and it seems to authenticate the tobacco. This middle transition has commendable longevity on me before evolving one last time.

The tobacco in the base and drydown stage takes on subtle elements of earth. Earlier in the life of Davidoff, the "feel" was a bit standoffish. The more mature Davidoff of one hour encompasses a warm and leathery aura and is more comfortable. Even at this stage of development, Davidoff is substantial. There's still not only depth, but the slightly burnt tobacco complemented with a light patchouli-moss.

Davidoff is a very masculine fragrance. It is no doubt a smokers scent or to be more accurate, an Eau de Toilette for those who love the aroma of tobacco.

Sillage is very good as is the presence and longevity. A full wearing of Davidoff affords me approximately 8 hours or the length of a work shift.
I like and own this fragrance and I find it very suitable for cool to cold weather due to its strength.

Thumbs up from Aromi for the 1984 classic that is Davidoff by Davidoff.

  1. Nice review, Aromi! I didn't even know this one existed. Gonna have to keep an eye out for it now. Your description of the drydown has me intrigued, to say the least.

  3. Back in 1986 the Davidoff Classic Hydrating Balm was my favourite (and my girlfriend's ;-).
Unfortunately, suddenly (when Zino and Cool Water appeared) this scent disappeared (in the Netherlands). For several years, I looked for this balm (also in other countries and airports), but couldn't find it anywhere... :-(

I can only find a few websites like this, talking about Davidoff Classic.

If someone knows where to buy a appreciate a message :-)
