That Man by Revlon

Have you ever detected someone wearing a scent that  you knew was from a bygone era, yet it still smelled pretty damn good in spite of it being dated? This is exactly the feeling I get every time I smell Revlon's That Man.

This is a substantial cologne and yes.....it does smell like a cologne. Normally, I care not for colognes and prefer EDT or EDP concentrations. That Man wears like an EDT in terms of substance, but retains its inescapable cologne aura.

Bergamot, Lemon, Petitgrain, Geranium, Clove, Cedar, Moss, Musk and Tonka are the listed notes according to PerfumeIntelligence and the accords seem to be accurate to my nose. The only note not listed that I detect is a subtle pepper, but that could be a combination of the heart notes giving off a bit of bite.

After about 15 to 20 minutes and the fragrance settles down, it's a very comfortable scent and I cannot help but to like it. It's a noticeable citric woody with a spicy floral heart at this stage. That Man wears in this manner for a considerable amount of time before it transitions again. Slowly but surely the moss creeps into the structure and only gains volume due to the others lowering theirs. The musk isn't a conventional 1958 rendition since it's low key and is satisfied to augment and stay in the wings.

I remember this fragrance in the 1960's from smelling it occasionally and seeing the advertisements, yet I never wore it. Now that I have a bottle, I can tell you that I have no problem wearing this in any season. I was born one year prior to this being released and am glad to have this in my rotation just for a change of pace. Would this wear well on someone in their 20's? I have to say yes, they could pull it off. They would smell different than their peers for sure.......but they would smell damn good.

    I was just thinking today how I have a terrible longing for 70s perfumes (the decade I was born into), and I went to great lengths to identify a perfume my mom used to wear when I was little. With someone's help, I was able to figure out that it was Jovan Grass Oil. I looked for some on eBay, and the prices are outrageous, so I don't think I'll be getting any for posterity's sake unless I find a really good deal. I remember the bottle on my mom's vanity so well, clear glass with blades of grass on it. I can imagine the smell, I wonder if my memory of the scent overreaches the scent itself. Hopefully someday I will find out. :)

    Hi Carrie ! I know exactly what you mean about Grass Oil and the prices it now fetches. I see a few bottles always up for bid and the sellers have a price-fixing arrangement for sure.

    I have the same problem trying to snag a bottle of Monsieur Jovan. The same 3 sellers have their prices set at $79 for a 3ounce bottle and I'm not willing to shell that out.

    I see a tiny bottle (1/3 oz) of Grass Oil going above $100, it's nuts. I'll keep my eye out for Monsieur for you in the future. One of these weekends I'll hit an estate sale and I'll have some good luck. My day will come!

    Oh, I don't want to post a link here, but do a search on eBay for Taxi Girl perfume, have you ever heard of it? I'm kind of obsessed with the name and the bottle. :)

Chanel copying Guerlain. Why?

                      Last month, I had the pleasure of trying Comète by Chanel, the latest addition to their prestigious Les Exclusifs line. This fragrance follows the release of Le Lion in 2020, another standout in the same collection. Like Le Lion , Comète is a beautiful perfume that captures the essence of Chanel’s refined elegance. However, both fragrances bear a striking resemblance to classic creations by Guerlain, leading me to ponder the direction Chanel is taking. Chanel has a great fragrance history. Not as hallowed and old as Guerlain but for past three decades it has far outshone Guerlain. In my view, no other perfume house has come close to Chanel’s excellence in this century. This makes their recent approach of echoing Guerlain classics somewhat perplexing. Have they run out of fresh ideas? Is Roger Dove at the helm of their fragrance division, or have they perhaps...

Teatro Alla Scala - Krizia

I tried Comete by Chanel today and wanted to write about how Chanel is going by the way of Roger Dove - copying old masterpieces. I did not know where to post that and then I realized I have been neglecting this blog. When I logged in I saw an unfinished post I wrote a year ago about Teatro Alla Scala by Krizia. Teatro is the best full bodied floral - better than any Chanel or Patou. Even better than Gucci L'Arte.  A brief background: Teatro Alla Scala is an Opera theatre in Milan. The bottle's design is an homage to the theatre and the perfume an homage to its sophisticated patrons. I wanted to write a symphony for it. Maybe some day.
